Ruby Copic Art

Hi everyone and welcome to another art blog. A few weeks ago I made a drawing of an Emerald, and I thought it was really funny and challenging, so I wanted to create something very similar... A Ruby!

I made the decision to work on some toned tak paper. For the Emerald I used grey toned paper, and I think the brown background will make the bright reds and highlight stand out.

For the coloring I actually struggled to find the right base color. I needed a light red/almost pink to make the highlights work. I tried a few different markers on another piece of paper, and I went with dark pink. (RV34)

For the rest of the red areas I used carmine, (R37) strong red, (R46) and peony. (RV69)

For the darkest areas I used a black marker and cool Grey 7. I made sure to go over the area a couple of times to get a very nice blending.

For the highlights I used a pink pencil, a white pencil, and a grey pencil. I also used a red and blue pencil, for extra fine details in a few places. Towards the end I gave it s few extra fine highlights with a white gelly roll pen, and that really made the gem pop! I enjoyed making this one and I’m thinking about turning it into a series, where I can teach you guys to create other precious stones. I hope you enjoyed this blog, and I'll see you all in the next one.
