Soldier Drawing
Hey there everybody and welcome to this blog. For this weeks blog entry im working in a portrait of soldierboy from the boys. The last Season is coming to an end really soon, and i really had to work on a drawing of him. Ive made drawings of both butcher and homelander, so this one will finish the trinity for me.
I decided to use Grey toned paper for this one. And this is my first portrait on this paper, which made i somewhat difficult to pick the colors for the skin tones, as the markers dry differenty on this type of paper. My main color for his skin was Milky white, (E51) it was warm enough to make a difference but not so much, that it looked off. For the darker areas of the skin i used soft sun, (E21) and dull Ivory. (E43) I also used pale grape (V91) for the Darkest parts around the eyes and hair line. For some of the warmer tones of the cheeks i used pinkisk white, (R00) and the Blush marker.(R20) I did also use barium yellow (Y00) on one side of his cheek and his forehead to create a 'Sunlight' feeling. I also used a beige pencil for this, and a black pencil for extra shading around the hair and eyes.
For the hair i used 4 markers: chamois,(E35) Sepia, (E37) burnt umber, (E29) and Dark bark. (E49) I started of using my pencil and gently mark which way the hairs go. And when i used my finest fineliner (0,03mm) to mKe a lot of individual hairs. When i Applied the lightest marker. And i know it might seems like the marker is barely visible after all the layers but it is important with a base color, and it can change the way the other markers look. I block the hair of into smaller sections to work on individually, and when Ive used all the markers i sometimes used a black and white pencil for finer detailing. In this case i also used the Beige pencil for a warmer tone.
Now for his costume... I started with a forrest green marker. (G17) From that i used pine tree green, (G29) Cool Grey 7 and a black marker. I also relied alot on a yellow pencil ot really get that yellow sunlight tone to pop through. His clothes was kind of tricky since it as this star pattern, and i had no ideas on how i was gonna pull it off. I ened up using a white gelly roll pen (0,5mm) and i usually use a 0,8mm or even a 10mm. So it was a tedious process and a lot of small stars but from afar it looks really good. For the copper details on the suit i used Lionet gold, (Y28) pale olive, (UG95) and warm grey 5. I did of course also use the white gelly roll pen and the yellow pencil.
It has been such a long time since i made a closeup portrait like this one and i can definitely feel that im a bit out of Practice and i had completely forgotten how time consuming these are a drawing like this one takes multiple hours over several days, but the result at the end shines through! I really hope you guys enjoyed this video and i cant wait to see how what happens in the finale. Hope you all have a great week.
