Vintage Winter Outfit

Hi everyone and welcome to this art blog. For this weeks blog Im working on a vintage inspired menswear illustration. I have a great passion for vintage mens clothing, and I’ve been wanting to draw something like this for a while, and I thought I could turn it into a series, where I once a month try to create an outfit that are based on some of my own clothes. Im also gonna try to match every month with the current weather situation, I think it’s gonna be fun Last year I challenged myself to draw a lot of glass and transparent things, as I know how much people struggle with it, including myself! Another thing I know that I’m not good at is drawing full body characters/portraits, so this is also gonna be difficult for me, as I often make proportion errors or other mistakes, when the character gets too small. After all, the face on this guy is not much bigger than a penny!

For the face I used Pale Fruit Pink(E000) for the base tone, and I choose this light color, because I’m going over the face multiple times to blend the other markers. I used Pinkisk White, (R00) Light Grape, (V95) and a blush marker. (R20) For some reason they're always blushing in those old style illustrations, and since I was going for that kind of style, the blush marker worked perfectly. For the hat, shoes, and trousers I used a mix of Cool Grey 3, 5, 7 and a black marker. The scarf in the drawing is actually made by a very close friend of mine, and Ive worn it alot. I used Cadmium Yellow, (Y15) and Golden Yellow (Y17) for it, and cool Grey 3.

For the main piece (the Overcoat) I used a mix of Smokey Blue, (B45) Night Blue, (B97) and Cool Grey 7. I also used a technique that I always forget about. The colorless blender marker. For those who don't know about it, it is basically a marker with clear alcohol in it, so when you apply it over an already existing color, it lighten the areas as you saturate the pigment. I used this method for the highlights on the coat. One of the things I love about this specific coat is the Herringbone pattern it got, but it also meant a tedious amount of work for this drawing I spend at least 30 minutes creating the small details on the coat, but it really is a rewarding feeling in the end!

In the end I think this is a good entry to this series. At least I think captured that retro effect... I’m very excited to see where we are going with these drawings, and I do hope that you enjoyed this blog, and will follow along. See you all!
