Bernese Mountain Dog

Hi there everyone and welcome to this art blog. In this blog I’m working on a dog portrait. I’ve drawn a lot of dogs and other animals over the years, and I think thats why I usually don’t like to do them. Ive been having a long break from dog drawing this year, but now I’m back and I’m also challengeing myself with this long haired bernese mountain dog.

Drawing fur can be very difficult, especially with markers, because the way they blend and the size of the nibs! But I’ve made my own kind of semi realistic style, that I will showcase today.

After a loose sketch I will usually use my finest fineliner (0.03) and gently make the first layers with that. It is also important to know which way the fur turns, to make it look as real as possible, and this really helps me with that.

And now for the colors... And there are always a lot of colors with fur! For the darkest parts I used Cool grey 7 and a black marker. First I apply a thin layer, where I make sure to have a few areas that I don't touch. Then I go over it again with the black marker, along small thin brush strokes, that I blend with a second layer of Cool grey 7. After that I detail the area with warm grey 7, a white, Brown, grey, and black pencil. I’m basically just making a bunch of small thin lines that creates the illusion of fur.

For the brown fur I used a sand marker (E33) as my base color. And then I gave some of the fur a light touch of the honey marker (Y38). And after that I added the thin brush strokes with the chamois marker (E35). Somewhere around the broder of the black and browns I also used a basic brown marker.(E08)

For the tongue and mouth I used a blush (R20) and the lipstick natural. (E04) I combined them with cool Grey 5, 7, and the black marker for shading and detailing. And for the teeth I used my silk marker (YR000) which added a yellowish hint.

This drawing was a bit of a challenge! I had completely forgotten how long it took to draw fur like this, but it was also fun and I’m glad I got to work on it. I hope that you guys enjoyed this little blog and that you hopefully learned a few things as well. Can't wait to see you all in the next blog!
